Self Made Chicken Coop Requirements

Chicken coop requirements will obviously vary depending on the size and style of the coop you want to build. In fact, you can save a lot of money by using existing “junk” that you might have already laying around your property. This article gives you some construction tips and ideas.

Framing Options

The absolute cheapest material to build your chicken coop’s frame out of is treated pine. However, pine is generally a bit flimsy, and if you really want a high quality coop you’re going to need to use other timbers such as hardwood (very strong, but heavy). To be honest, it all depends on your personal preference and budget. You can use tree branches if you really want to save some cash!

The Chicken Run

Unless you’ve got a large, well-protected backyard/farm, you’re going to need to build a chicken run. This can be as simple as throwing up a mesh wire fence around the coop. You can then the birds run on grass, though it’s going to look pretty unsightly very fast. Most chicken coop flooring in made from straw or even sand.

The Nesting Area

Nests can be built from cheap timber, or even just cardboard boxes. Nests generally don’t need to be extremely sturdy because you’re going to place them inside the hen house, so they’ll be protected from harsh weather in any case. Building a mobile chicken coop is going to be a very good option if you’re just getting started with breeding chickens and aren’t looking for a large commitment or if you don’t know that you will be on your farm that much longer and don’t want something as permanent. Mobile chicken coops offer a number of benefits, so it’s something to keep in mind as you go about your building plans.

Complete Climate Control

One of the nicest things about mobile chicken coops is that they offer you a much higher degree of climate control. With a stationary chicken coop, if the weather becomes very miserable outside, there isn’t a whole lot you can do about it apart from hope that whatever materials you used to build the coop, the chickens will be protected.

With the mobile chicken coop on the other hand, you can easily move the coop indoors into your garage so the chickens can stay there until the weather outside improves. This makes it the ideal type of coop for those in rainy climates or in places where you do tend to get very extreme winds or weather on an occasional basis.

You Can View The Chickens Easier

Another reason you might want to consider a mobile chicken coop is if you wish to watch the chickens every now and then or if you have young children who are taking part in the building and looking after the chickens. Finally, the third benefit that a mobile chicken coop will offer is the ease in clean-up and maintenance. You’ll have a much easier time cleaning around and under the coop if you can simply move it to another area of the yard, rather than when it’s stationed in one spot.

Further, if you want to really wash the coop down, with a mobile chicken coop you simply need to just transport it near the house or garage and you’ll have full access to all your cleaning supplies.

This can save you a great deal of time in the long run, so something that many people raising chickens really value.

So, keep these points in mind. While a mobile chicken coop isn’t going to serve every purpose, it does tend to work very well for many cases.

Finding a good quality chicken coop plan on the internet is surprisingly difficult. However, if you’re willing to dig through all the advertising and marketing lingo, there are some pretty good plans out there. This article outlines some chicken coop pre-construction essentials.

Before You Start

Right, this may be a bit boring, but it’s important! Still, if you already know how many chickens you need to keep it will be pretty easy. You need to decide on 3 main things:

- Size

- Style

- Position

As far as size goes, it’s basically a choice out of small, medium or large. Small coops are great for just a few birds, and are easy to move around and to clean. Medium coops are generally box-shaped and provide adequate running space for 5-9 birds. Large, premium sized coops are for when you’re serious about raising chickens, and want to maximise egg yields.

When it comes to chicken coop styles, you really need to take in to account the climate. You might want to include a hen house to enclose the nests if you live in a particularly wet area. Also, if you are a fan of “free range” breeding, a large chicken run is always a good investment. High quality building plans will show you all about this.

The position of your coop is also extremely important. Chickens are particularly sensitive to subtle changes in light, and will lay differently from season to season. It’s important that the birds get adequate sunlight in the morning. Position the coop to take advantage of this. Again, if you don’t get much sun in your area, install a small light inside the nesting area.

I never thought that Chicken Coop Plans would be something I could get interested in. Well my uncle decided to take up chicken keeping as his latest hobby. He would get organics eggs to eat daily and his kids would enjoy feeding and looking after the chickens.

There are people that make additional money by selling the fresh free range eggs of their chickens.. You may find that the chickens will ‘earn’ their keep if you sell some of the eggs.. You may even find yourself with some profit.

At first, Uncle Dave thought he might be able to buy a chicken coop at a reasonable price. However, as soon as he saw how much they cost, he decided to build one himself. He then made a search for easy chicken coop plans.

He wanted a plan that was clear and easy to follow. He also felt that the children would enjoy watching the plan unfold and be involved at every step.

I didn’t realise that there would be many things to taken into consideration such as the materials, ventilation, positioning etc. Even that there were actual drawbacks to using some of the cheaper materials that would even cost a person more in the long term.

The fact that you needed to keep chickens really safe was a particular concern. Chickens actually need quite a lot of protection from predators such as snakes, foxes, possoms, racoons etc. You will also need to ensure that the chicken wire is securely fastened to the coup for their safety.

Another factors to take into consideration is which is the best bedding to use? A few people said that sawdust is soft and makes great bedding, and that sawdust is easier to clean and will absorb the odor longer. However, others said that the sawdust will get into their eyes and the chickens would scratch the sawdust out of the pen. However, uncle and the children chose straw for the bedding as they read that Straw helps the water drain to the bottom and it will give the chickens something to “scratch” through. It’s safe for them to eat.

By following an easy plan, you can build your own coops, no matter what size, for a fraction of the cost of buying a pre-packaged kit. You can often save as much as 50% of the cost of buying a chicken house by building it yourself. He needed a plan where he could use his own tools. Uncle Dave has a lot of tools in his garage so felt he could use these to build his coop.
